News and Announcements

This past weekend, Head Coach Ryan Wickert and Assistant Coach Matthew Wickert led a Kelowna Tyke team on a very memorable trip to Coquitlam for the first lacrosse tournament any of the kids had ever participated in. This wasn’t just “any” tournament either, but the Jean Andre tournament/jamboree. The Jean Andrew Tyke tournament was hosted by Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse, and saw 20 Tyke teams take part in what was billed as the largest Tyke lacrosse tournament in Western Canada.

After having proudly marched into the arena with the Kelowna Minor lacrosse Kodiaks banner for the opening ceremonies on Friday night June 21, the team went undefeated, besting Port Moody 8-2, and defeating the host Coquitlam Adanacs Tyke teams 7-1 and 3-0. Opposing coaches complimented the Kelowna Kodiaks on their tenacity, commitment to defense, and team speed.

This caps off a 13-2 record for the team this year (incld. no more than 2 goals being scored against the team in any single game). Well done to Coach Ryan/Matthew Wickert.

We know that this means we’ll be hearing more accomplishments coming from the 2005/2006 cohort of Kelowna Kodiaks lacrosse players in the future. Congratulations to the players, their coaches, and families!!

Lacrosse friends,

For nearly 27 years the Kelowna Minor Lacrosse Association (KMLA) has offered box and field lacrosse programs for 5 to 17 year olds in our community. Delivery of lacrosse in the Kelowna and West Kelowna areas depends entirely on volunteers, starting with administrative volunteers who serve on the KMLA Executive. Many of our volunteers have served you and your children in one way or another for more than five years.

Our Executive volunteers are no different than you. The majority of our volunteers started to engage with none or limited prior experience. We are also like you in terms of juggling multiple commitments: family, work, sports and other hobbies. At one time or another, our Executive members decided to answer an appeal like this, and said yes to lacrosse in Kelowna.

Come September 23, KMLA is in need of a wide range of volunteers to join the KMLA Executive, and continue to move lacrosse forward in our area. Many KMLA members are stepping aside, having worked to serve your athlete over the past several years. I can assure all that these volunteers are at the stage where a lack of hands in the air come time for nominations will not translate into serving “one more year”.

Recent Executive members have worked hard to put in place and document policy, procedures and systems. This provides new volunteers with a solid foundation. We also have several extremely competent returning members who will stay with the Executive in 2013, and help maintain continuity of ‘institutional memory’.

Please take some time to seriously consider the positions that are open in the attached notice of KMLA Executive vacancies. Without people like you in these roles, KMLA cannot operate. For those that will answer the call, thank-you for taking your turn in support of our game.
